Freon ® is a trade name give to refrigerants by DuPont.  These are most commonly used in refrigeration and air conditioning units. They have also been used as propellants in aerosol cans as well as many other uses.  Refrigerants were developed at first by General Motors wanting to replace more dangerous chemicals such as ammonia.  There are many different types and makers of refrigerants.  They are most still commonly called Freon by home owners, after DuPonts original trade name.  Due to the Montreal Protocol Act most refrigerants are now regulated or banned completely from manufacturing.  Of those, r-12 (used mainly in cars, refrigerators).  R-11 used for chillers, aerosol cans, and cleaning). R-502 (used for freezers, and cooling boxes) are no longer allowed to be manufactured in most countries.
