AC Repair Meridian

Today’s air conditioning repair Meridian tip is about capacitors.  A capacitor is a device that is used on most motors in your ac.  The purpose of a capacitor is to help with the turning motion to start the motor.  When you have an air conditioning repair Meridian caused by a capacitor the motor will either not start at all or it will quickly overheat.

What Are They, How Do I Know?

Most capacitors are silver in color and shaped like a sphere.  Often times when they go bad they are easy to spot because they will be puffed up as if they exploded.  Other times you will need to use a capacitor checker to see what reading you have.  The proper reading will be listed on the side of the capacitor such as 10uf.  When using a capacitor checker your reading should be no less than 10% of listed value.  Anything lower is considered bad and could damage your motor.  A capacitor is a simple repair taking only minutes and costing from $110-$180 depending on the size.  Don’t be fooled, we have noticed companies charging  double or triple these amounts.  So if you are having an air conditioning repair Meridian it might help to know a bit about capacitors.

The capacitor in the picture is what is called a duel capacitor, meaning it handles more than one motor.  This one is a 60/5 meaning the reading for the compressor side of the capacitor is 60uf and the fan side is 5uf.  It is possible for just 1 side to be bad.  Stay informed and stay cool!
